Describe your background and industry experience, and explain how it will help you contribute to the SOCAN Board of Directors?

My name is Justin Gray. Since 1992, I’ve been a SOCAN member, a songwriter and producer with hundreds of songs released by global stars like Mariah Carey, John Legend, and Avril Lavigne. Over these decades, I’ve witnessed firsthand the revolutionary impact of technology on our industry.

In 2007, I moved to Los Angeles, and a disconnect from SOCAN grew. It’s a feeling shared by many Canadian creators abroad. We feel isolated. However, I also saw how technology could bridge these gaps.

My nearly 30 years of experience – as a songwriter, producer, publisher, and advocate – compels me to act. I believe I have a duty to represent the voices of Canadian creators, especially those living abroad. We need SOCAN to be a leader in leveraging technology, not just adapting to it. We need to build a future where Canadian songwriters can thrive globally, empowered by cutting- edge tools and a truly connected community. Let’s harness technology to amplify our voices and ensure our music resonates worldwide.

In your opinion, what issues will be most important to SOCAN members over the next three years?

Technology isn’t optional; it’s vital for Canadian songwriters. We’ve invested billions in copyrights since 1925, and these rights need protection and growth, especially against streaming’s devaluation.

Technology offers global reach, streamlined royalties, and crucial data. Imagine seamless international collaborations, real-time tracking, and fair pay. I’ve built a tech company using AI to maximize music IP, placing songs in film/TV and unlocking dormant catalogs. This experience proves SOCAN must lead technologically.

I can be a strong voice for modernizing Canadian music, benefiting songwriters, publishers, and labels. Most creators monetize only 5% of their assets. Technology can double that, increasing revenue and ensuring a sustainable living. Let’s leverage tech to empower creators and amplify Canadian music globally.
