Describe your background and industry experience, and explain how it will help you contribute to the SOCAN Board of Directors?
Tim MacMillar is the guitarist for Protest The Hero for over 20 years. He has recorded 6 albums and toured globally in this time. He is very involved in the behind-the-scenes business strategy. He has also started a sheet music company called Sheet Happens and though he no longer works there, he was instrumental in getting it off the ground. In the last 5 years, he has built a business management company Aye Aye Music that is helping many musicians and industry clients with their finances.
I’d bring the perspective of an artist who’s working in the industry but also as someone who has seen what many artists have done. There could be an educational strategy to help empower SOCAN members to actively understand how SOCAN works and how to collect their royalties. I have met people who haven’t registered or aren’t using all the benefits of being a member so I’d like to help bridge the gap here.
In your opinion, what issues will be most important to SOCAN members over the next three years?
Making sure that music being used in places online are getting tracked and collected for. New avenues are popping up all the time and often the companies haven’t considered this cost of doing business.
